. The Back Yard
. Small lake and gazebo

The stream that empties out of the Grotto forms a small lake right outside. This lake is often used as a swimming hole, especially by the younger residents, who enjoy the feel of the sandy bottom. The gentle sounds of water burbling, frogs croaking, and birds chirping fill the air -- except when the kids are screeching! The lake narrows and empties into a stream to the north, where stepping stones afford an easy walk. A gazebo with six sides is on the western shore of the small lake. It is a restful place for contemplation or conversation.

The grounds in this area -- around the patio, lake, and gazebo -- are lovingly tended and maintained. There are flowerbeds, herb gardens, and soft paths. A couple trees offer shade.

. Large lake and wash-house

The small lake empties into a stream and then into a larger lake. A footbridge crosses the stream before it enters the large lake. This larger lake is less tamed, and it has reeds and cattails around the margins, especially in the north. The bottom is muddy, and folk do not swim here. A wash-house on the western shore juts out over the lake, and water is easily drawn up for laundry and baths. The gardeners store tools and supplies there as well.

A long huge hedge grows 15 feet wide and 20 feet tall in a semicircle all around the grounds, right up to the edge of the cliff on the east and west. There is a wide wooden gate in back to allow passage through the hedge, which is just about a third of a mile long.

The larger area is given over to meadows and gardens full of vegetables and grapes. Along the stream there are a few maples and oaks, and an orchard of apple, mango, peach, and breadfruit trees nestles from west of the wash-house almost up to the hedge.
