Nexus's Minor Energy Gate (Evocation/Alteration-Summoning)
Level: 1 Wizard
Range: 4" + 1"/level
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous, in practical terms
Casting Time: 2 segments
Area of Effect: cone, 15 ft long, 10 ft wide at end
Saving Throw: 1/2, and special
Explanation/Description: This spell opens a very small (1 in diameter) gate to a material plane of Energy (Positive or Negative). The gate lasts only a short time (seconds), and during that time the release of energy will damage those within the "blast radius," a cone as described above. Damage done depends on the nature of the victim:

or coexist in | |||
Mundane creature | From other plane | Positive plane | Negative plane | |
Positive energy | d4-1 / level | d4 / level | no damage | d4+1 / level |
Negative energy | d4-1 / level | d4 / level | d4+1 / level | no damage |
Those within 5 ft of the opening and in the area of effect must save vs. spell for half or full damage; those farther away must save for none or half. The caster can position the 'gate anywhere within the range given, directing it as he wishes.
[Note: a more potent version of this spell was proposed but never researched: Energy Gate, a third level spell, was envisioned with a longer casting time, better range, and bigger cone (35 ft long, 30 ft wide at end). It would have used d6 instead of d4. Greater effect: within 15 ft. Save twice: for damage (full or half; half or none) and for blindness (2-8 rounds or segments, 1-3 rounds or none.)]
