Aligned and Realigned (day 542-572)
(Preliminary notes and such)
GM: Day 541 - You hit a village of (believe it or not) lawful good bugbears. A few speak common. They tell you that the Land of the Elves is 10 to 14 days south (at your current rate).
Me: I think they are overestimating my speed. I think it would take me like 15 to 20 days. But maybe there are prevailing currents that would speed up my travel south of here. Doesn't matter though, because I intend to leave the boat here rather than risk shipwreck by "sailing" on myself, not to mention tearing up whales' mouths.
GM: During the night you surprisingly take on lots of water in the quarters you occupy, in fact, it wakes you up by reaching up to bed level in your cabin! You move all of your valuables to one of the ever diminishing dry spots on boat and you notice something very strange. One of your eggs (the "sea-related" one) appears to have gotten wet (and for some time it seems). It has swelled to a larger size (20 percent bigger) and is changing color.
Me: I have to make friends with these bugbears. I need to hire one or two to stay on board my boat and bail continually. It also seems that I have to play Mother Hen, now, and hatch that egg, sooner than I had planned, but oh well.
Egg hatching: Use my Arrow to find an underwater cave. If I can't find a good cave, I'll just stay at and near the shore. If I can, I'll make a rouch little cave by expanding a niche in any handy coral reef nearby. Whichever, three Water Breathe spells a day will keep me happy under the surface. Anyway, I'll keep my egg moist and happy - resting in the cave or on the beach or under the surface or under sand. In addition to cave, beach, and sea water exposure, I will always have magic near the egg. My staff will stay very close by at all times. I will put my magic mace, dagger, and two continual lights under the egg whenever I set it down. I will cast spells on the eggmultiple times daily: Bless, Pro Evil, Aid, Cure Serious, Free Action, etc.
By the way - standard operating procedure is that my Staff is on guard whenever I sleep. Let me know if it takes more than a month for this thing to hatch.
GM: Day 550
You are lying on the beach one evening, feet being touched by the outgoing tide. In an hour both suns will set. You keep the egg wet with salt water from the Great Ocean. You nurse the egg it like a good mamma. Your demon-staff is planted 15 feet in the tan, large-grained sands behind you. It is on guard. You begin to doze...
You awake from a light sleep by the calm voice of your most possessed staff, "Lord Whorfin! Get up! Come on Johnie-boy. Something VERY strange is happening to your egg you silly wet ostrich! Yo! Yo-ho!"
"Watch out behind me!" demon-staff laughs.
The Lotharian skies, normally cerulean during a cloudless summer day are dark now. It is obviously night time. The high, cold, black waves are about 20 feet from your feet at their maximum extension.
You are startled. From a sitting position you strain your neck and check behind you. But see nothing unusual seems to be about. Once again you are the helpless victim to your staff's chaotic sense of humor. You wonder where that behavior originated from...
You ask your staff what is going on and what did it see and it replies, "Listen my non-wood brother, there are things I do and things that I do not do. This is what I do, when specifically set, I detect:
1) Demons 2) Teleports 3) Maybe demonly teleports 4) And maybe teleporting demons
"Period! Stop trying to weasel more work out of me. I may be a near-perfect minor mirror image of your personality but I've got rights too. When you tax me I get very, very, very, very, very bored and unreliable. So stop it! Lately you are becoming such a real dictator."
Annoyed with your defiant magic item you turn your attention back to your now broken (and empty) egg shell.
"Damn shit." you profane. Your god forgives you (this time).
With your infravison you pick up a small warm body swimming about 50 feet out in the surf. It is zipping back and forth through the water. You can not make it out.
Me: Wearing my ring of swimming, I'll swim out to get it.
GM: You retrieve a baby Grey Dragon.
Me: I'll cast Create Food.
GM: The spell fails for some reason.
Me: I'll set the baby down on the sand (watching to make sure it doesn't escape) and cast Animal Summoning I to bring in seals or sea otters or dolphins. I'll cast Speak to Animals and ask them to catch fish. I'll cast Bless on the fish they catch and feed the baby with the fish. Then I'll give great thanks and praise to God for his help with the baby. I'll ask him or her to watch over and bless the baby. We can hang out for days/weeks. I will try to cast the Create Food tomorrow - both near and far from the baby. But not out of sight.
GM: You may not be able to travel right away with your new package. It may require some time (days/weeks) to build up the dragon's tolerance/strength for this.
Because the boat is in danger of foundering, you and some friendly bugbears drag it ashore. You find that the grounded ship seems to be a place the baby dragon enjoys.
You find that your spells fail you about half the time. You also fail in praying for spells about half the time.
Me: I'll need to stay at the village for a while. The baby will be with me 24 hours a day. Here are the things I need to do while the baby grows and gets strong enough to carry (in priority order):
How long is it before I feel the baby can travel (carried by me as I swim) to the Elf Colony? How long did it take to hatch the egg? What is the name of the village? I'll befriend anyone in the village who seems friendly to me.
