Background (events just before the quest of the Druidic Oracle)
Jabirath-o-Namakazz returned to his homeland after defeating an New Avalon invader monk and restoring a sacred totem to its holy place. But he discovered that a new kind of invader has arrived on the scene. A group of strangers has taken control of the New Avalon fort at Albany. They speak a strange language called "Quicktalk" or "Quickly." Everyone in Albany and the close-by villages have been told they are now "Citizens of Albany" -- they must all relocate to Albany proper, speak the invaders' language, and swear fealty to the leader, a woman. The new rulers hate magic -- they killed the town's scholar-mage (a New Avaloner, but known for his respect for Mountain People culture) and outlawed all magic books and items (except those made by priests). They have unusually intelligent animals who serve them, including giant birds that warriors ride on. And they are afraid of the jungle -- they burned off a mile radius of jungle around Albany.
The Druidic Oracle went among them, and he was interrogated and driven mad. He leapt off the cliffs and died in the river below.
The Great Druid contacted Kazz and sent him with a message to Abrac Adabra and Tim Zoltan in Shoal. The message asked that they come with Kazz to a sacred place south of Albany to attend a council.
Great events followed, and the Great Druid has since said that he owes Kazz a favor in return for saving the oracle's gem.
Origins
Jabirath-o-Namakazz is a black-haired Mountain Person from a village half a day's walk north of Albany. His name means "Struggle-for-Souls." The outsiders (New Avaloners) came to town when he was just a boy, seeking treasure and totems. He felt an inexplicable unease at their presence, but couldn't pin it down for a few years. Eventually, he began to realize that something to do with the removal of the ancient relics from the region was linked to his sense of unease. He began to pay more attention to what was going on -- unusual for a Mountain Person, he began to CARE. Just as he reached his teens, he became involved in an ill-considered attempt to stop the removal of an artifact from the region. Barely escaping with his life from the militia, he made his way into the countryside and hid out. Weeks later, starving and suffering from unaccustomed privation, he was set upon by a pack of wolves. Just as he was dragged down, a man intervened, somehow calling off the wolves. He soon learned that the man was a druid. The old man tended his wounds and motioned for him to follow. As they walked, the man listened to his story, occasionally nodding and grunting to himself. After some days they arrived at a cave mouth. The druid motioned Kazz toward the cave. Kazz moved as he was told, stopping only to face the druid, and swear by the Cam gods that he would repay the druid's kindness one day. The old man gave a knowing smile and said "I know" before turning to walk away.
Kazz moved to enter the cave, when he heard a noise behind him. Whirling, he turned to find nothing ... and immediately had his legs swept out from under him from behind. He scrabbled to his feet, eyes wild, and saw no one. A hand on his shoulder let him know he wasn't alone. A moment later, he was looking up into the smiling face of a weather-beaten old man -- a Mountain Person, but with a difference. The old man said, "So, would you like to see what it is like to be a man of spirit?" Kazz nodded, and then made a lunge for the old man. Quicker than light, he was on his face again. The old man gave him a hand up, laughing and saying "You'll do. Come, there is not much time. You must learn our people's old ways, the ways we followed when our souls were strong, not faded." He said a word under his breath and moved into the cave. For the next few years, they lived, trained, explored, fought, laughed and cried together, but the old man gave no name. One day, he called to Kazz, saying, "It is time." Kazz said,"I have learned everything that I need, except one thing. That is your name." The old man shook his head sorrowfully, and said, "I told you the first day I met you, but you were too foolish to listen." Kazz looked at him in disbelief, then thought back to that day, focusing his thoughts ... and the mumbled word came back with the force of a runaway landslide. "Sojekk." The old man disappeared in a searing flash, leaving behind a spear with a carved symbol of his visage.
Druidic Service
Kazz left after receiving his Totemic Spear, and sought out the druid who had saved him from the wolves many years ago. After some months of searching, he found the old druid, who welcomed him without comment. Kazz served the Druids for many years, as repayment for saving his life and as a way to prepare himself for the return to Albany that he knew must come. In his friendship and service, Kazz is unusual for a Mountain Person Monk; they usually do not associate closely with Druids, although they respect them. More often, Druids keep to the Lowland Rain Forest, and seldom come into the Mountains.
The Toesetochiss (Society of Protectors)
Kazz returned home from time to time to learn new skills. The secret organization of monks in the Mountain Lands is called the Tosetochiss, that is, the Society of Protectors. As a member, Kazz has gone to the Protectors for training, and has been responsible for aiding in Tosetochiss efforts to keep predators (natural and monsterous) at bay. Kazz has often fought against orc raiders, although lately the orcs have been more peaceful. Some of Kazz's fellow Protectors have an unusual specialty -- instead of adding one point of damage per two levels with monk weapons, they add that much damage to any blow against orcs, even with open hand attacks.
Further Adventures
As he became more powerful, Kazz tended to explore and travel on his own or in a small company of friends. In his adventures, Kazz has visited a number of unusual lands:
The first Duel for Rank
Jabirath-o-Namakazz's works took him to many parts of the world, where he learned from human teachers and animal fighters (Tiger style, Crane style, etc.) alike. Eventually, Kazz's martial arts learning and training advanced to the point that he was ready to challenge a master for his 8th rank. Kazz sought out a monk -- a newcomer -- who was said to have acquired a small talisman. He found the newcomer in the lands between Shoal and New Avalon, near where druid friends of Kazz dwelt. Kazz persuaded the other monk to accept a challenge to first strike, with the winner taking the rank, and one item of the winner's choosing. Kazz used his Spirit of One Cut to seize the advantage, and struck home with a mighty kick. The other monk, bound by his promise, surrendered the talisman to Kazz. Having done this sent a sense of rightness and immediacy through Kazz's spirit, and he took leave of the Druids' service, and set out for Albany, where he returned the talisman to its original place, hidden in a sacred cave.
Becoming an Eternal
During a trip to the Dwarven lands with the Eternals party, Kazz chose to touch a shard imbued with Eternal energy. He was linked to (revealed to be?) a long lost Eternal member, Dave, and (re)gained some spellcasting skills.
