Old Screeds

20 Years of Screeds

20 Years of Screeds

Twenty years.

I wrote my very first screed on November 15, 2004. That was this one, about two-legged cat-people. I guess that was close enough to make it liontaur-adjacent. Plus it was in response to an actual email query ... I've had vanishingly few people reach out to me over the years, so I was probably pretty excited about a feline question from a fan, lol. Of course, nowadays, there are even more feline humanoid options out there, most notably ...

Anyway, here's what 20 years of on-and-off blogging looks like.

Screeds Breakdown

The colors in that pie chart are not random. They correspond to the colors of the boxes on my home page. Specifically, the post colors have these meanings: Green = Wemic, Lavender = D&D, White = Web Comic, and Blue = Miscellany, Random, and Around the Web.

So, 485 posts in 20 years. Only 109 of those got the wemic color, just under a quarter. But wait! 96 Cat's Grace comic strips featured a wemic hero. Three Robot Heavens mention wemics. And six posts not colored as wemic do mention them (including this post). So that's really 213 posts, or almost 44 percent. Add in the other wemic content scattered around the site, and maybe you could make a case that Cayzle's Wemic Site is more wemic content than not. Maybe.

And when you do the math, 485 posts over 20 years means 24.25 posts a year, or 2.02 posts per month, or 0.93 posts per fortnight (at 26 fortnights a year). I do wish I could say in good faith that yes, Iron Cayzle posts once a fortnight, like clockwork. But that would be misleading, and, well, actually dishonest! Yes, it averages to once per fortnight, but in fact, there have been years when I was posting twice a week, and others when I was as silent as a liontaur's footfall. Here's a little graph I made showing posting over time:

Screeds Distribution

You can see that I've had fertile periods, like 2005-2008 and 2014-2016. And I've had fallow times too, like the blogging deserts of 2010, 2012, and 2023. I do have an explanation for the 2023 gap -- I've been super busy wrting the rules for Labyrinths & Liontaurs, my new indie RPG, still in progress as I type this.

And of course, it's 20 years of blogging that we are celebrating here, since 2004. The site itself was launched on July 6, 1999. So I've been running Cayzle's Wemic Site for over 25 years, now. I see I dd make a post on July 7 of this year, 25 years and a day since I launched, but I did not realize the significance at the time.

Well, I guess I'll see you in 20 years for the 40 year mark. I'll be 81, so there's a solid 25% chance I'll be blogging then. :-) Hope springs eternal!
