I know that the American holiday of Memorial Day honors those who died for their country during time of war. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. Nonetheless, to me it also seems a fine day to remember loved ones who have passed away. My sister and I took a couple hours this weekend to tend the graves of our family members.

My mother, Kathleen Diane (nee Van Tassell) Alterio, 1941-2021, and my father, Joseph Anthony Alterio, 1941-2010.

My aunt, Marie Ann Alterio, 1944-2013.

My great-aunt, Mary T. "Babe" (nee Mincio) Stellato, 1923-1988, and my great-uncle, Joseph P. Stellato. Uncle Joe was a World War II veteran. He was also my confirmation sponsor.

My paternal grandfather, John Joseph Alterio, 1907-1965, and grandmother, Angela Marie (nee Mincio) Alterio, 1914-2005. Their baby, Mary Frances, who died at age 1, is also buried here.

My great-aunt, Lena Alterio, 1906-1985, and her mother, my great-grandmother, Mary L. (nee Scarpelina) Alterio, 1878-1961.

My paternal grandmother's parents, Eusebio M. Mincio, 1890-1970, and Margherita (nee Sabato) Mincio, 1890-1934. Their daughter, Filomena, is also buried here.
Eternal rest grant to them, oh Lord,
and may the perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace.
May their souls,
and all the souls of our beloved departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace.
Amen.
